Tips from Sr Rene Lessing –
Advanced Wound Care Nurse

At our wound clinic, we treat many patients with painful and problem feet.  Assisting the patient to choose the correct footwear becomes part of our treatment plan.

Foot problems such as bunions, hammertoes, plantar fasciitis and claw toe are just a few.  We educate these patients to purchase shoes that support the shape of their feet, a shoe that would not cause pressure and would have room for the toes.

Pressure injuries due to incorrect footwear is quite common, especially when it comes to patients with neuropathy.  These patients have nerve damage and cannot feel in certain parts of their feet.  When they wear shoes that are ill-fitting, it creates pressure points, that can cause pressure injuries within hours.  The cost of healing these wounds comes to thousands of rands.  The minimalistic shoe is definitely a shoe that we recommend to persons with neuropathy or problem feet.  The shoe conforms to the shape of the foot, without causing any pressure whatsoever.  The toe box has lots of space for the toes to be comfortable.  The shoe is breathable and does not build up moisture, creating fungal infections.  It is lightweight and has non-slip soles that prevent slipping or falling.

Remember you only have two feet, look after them.
